Excellent opportunity for someone with strong cross border experience as well as strategic management experience that would like to build and develop a cross border team. Initially this will be a sole contributor, however working for a large insurer, there will be lots of support available. I am looking for someone with commercial insurance experience in underwriting or with an international brokerage and with strong U.S. market expertise.

Title: Senior Manager – International Underwriting

Location: Toronto, Downtown with flexibility to work from home or other offices


  • Act as the main contact with cross border partners in the U.S. to maintain/develop relationships
  • Act as the main contact with other offices outside of Canada to share best practices and accelerate development of multinational capabilities.
  • Act as main contact with internal executives for matters relating to cross border business.
  • Collaborate with cross border partners and functions, to deliver solutions for international transactions.
  • Develop and implement all operating guidelines for the cross-border desk.
  • Develop and implement the roadmap for the cross-border desk/capability, including creation of CBAs for required technology and people investments.
  • Collaborate with CTU to implement quality and governance controls relating to all aspects of cross border (i.e. cross border desk operations, financial record keeping, claims handling etc.)
  • Maintain knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes, including competitive analysis and information, and ensure that all necessary management systems are updated and current.


  • 10+ years insurance experience, with demonstrated success in operational and/or P&L ownership roles.
  • Bachelor’s degree: Preferably in risk management, business administration or quantitative fields.
  • Supplementary insurance designations (e.g. CIP, CRM, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of U.S. P&C insurance market and/or demonstrated experience working in the U.S. market or handling U.S. cross border operations of a Canadian risk carrier or international broker.
  • Experience and success executing in a multi disciplinary environment with internal and external partners
  • Demonstrated experience with insurance operations.
  • Proficiency at managing multiple and changing priorities/projects and delivering results.  Able to work with long-term perspective in addressing business area problems/issues.
  • In depth understanding of Commercial Lines products.
  • Demonstrated verbal, written communication and presentation skills fit for communication to executive.
