Senior Actuarial Associate/Actuary – Property & Casualty

Working with a leading reinsurance company that is seeking a Senior Actuarial Associate/Actuary to join their Corporate Actuarial team. The team is responsible for the Reserving and Financial Reporting of Canadian Non-Life companies.

Reporting into the Director, IFRS17, the Senior Actuarial Associate/Actuary will manage the development of actuarial aspects of IFRS17 for the group of companies.

This is a great opportunity for you to work intensely with the new IFRS17 financial reporting standard, which is a major change for the insurance industry. We are looking for someone who is passionate about analysing results, providing insights and working in a collaborative environment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Technical expertise of IFRS17 topics including PAA and GMA, assumptions, data requirements and financial statement/position presentation.
  • Understands the company’s methodology used to generate cashflows and produce IFRS17 financials, and IFRS17 reserving inputs/assumptions required for modelling. Delivers data/assumptions for IFRS17 testing. Analyses results of testing/modelling.
  • Leads regular communications, including drafting of topics and preparation of discussion material.
  • Provides insights regarding Canadian specifics, including OSFI and CIA requirements.
  • Understands financial data, working with Corporate Actuarial team to extract/obtain data as required.
  • Understands reinsurance structures and IFRS17 modelling implications, providing input t as required.
  • Continued development of a local IFRS17 assessment tool, including sensitivity testing and comparison against company outputs.
  • Provides data/analysis to respond to regulatory IFRS17 requests.
  • Works closely with other IFRS17 leads in Canada and external IFRS17 actuarial resources.
  • Works closely with Risk to provide IFRS17 knowledge/inputs in development of FCT under IFRS17.
  • Takes an active role in development and roll out of local IFRS17 communication material.
  • Keeps abreast of global and Canadian industry IFRS17 developments, including CIA position papers/educational notes and OSFI guidelines.

Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelors’ Degree in Actuarial Sciences or Equivalent required.
  • ACAS/ACIA (Associate of Casualty Actuarial Society/Canadian Institute of Actuaries) preferred.
  • Working towards FCIA (Fellowship of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of knowledge and experience in property & casualty industry, with a focus on reserving.
  • Knowledge of IFRS17 desired.
  • Experience with reserving and financial forecasting preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Keen strategic thinking, business acumen and problem solving skills.
  • Superior attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills.
  • Ability to make technical decisions (e.g. modeling decisions, data decisions).
  • Demonstrates sound judgement in actuarial decision making.
  • Well-developed organization skills, with the ability to analyze current processes and procedures and recommend and implement improvements.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to work with all areas of the company collaboratively to achieve results under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to handle a number of diverse projects and coordinate the activities of others in a performance-oriented culture.
  • Advanced Software/ application knowledge including – MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
  • Experience with Power BI or similar software desired.
