Portage has approximately 250 employees throughout head office and their 4 regional branches – Western Canada (Edmonton), Prairies (Portage la Prairie), Ontario (St. Catharines), and Atlantic (Halifax).

Due to an upcoming retirement, Portage has partnered with DGA Careers to secure a Vice President of Claims for their Head Office as part of their Senior Leadership Team.  Technical expertise, leadership, and cultural fit are equally important.  Portage prides itself on the ‘personal touch’ and is looking for the ideal Senior Leader to emanate those same values.

The Vice President of Claims reports to the CFO and is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team. This position is responsible for overseeing and directing all claims activities and provides guidance to the company, including development of corporate strategy and policy for claims service.  Also, important is to ensure all claims objectives are being met and policy and procedures are being followed.


Location: Portage la Prairie, Manitoba or Winnipeg, Manitoba, and commute to Portage la Prairie 2-3 days per week.

As the Vice President of Claims, you will work closely with the claims managers at each of the four branches to ensure claims service is maintained throughout the Company. It’s important that you have a proven track record of managing, leading, inspiring employee engagement and communicating the right information at the right time. Essential functions include assisting in the professional development of claims team, staying current on the changes in the industry, and remaining knowledgeable on the external competitive market.


The successful candidate will be a strong decision-maker with the ability to put efficient claims processes into action. This includes developing, reviewing, and approving claim guidelines, and communicating policies and procedures to employees and independent adjusters. Another key requirement of the role is to analyze, consolidate, prepare reports, and communicate critical claims information to the CEO, COO and CFO. The Vice President of Claims is a figurehead of the company, speaking and acting in a way that represents Portage’s culture at industry functions.

The successful candidate will be a seasoned, innovative leader with at least 10 years of increasing senior claims experience and leadership. Ideally, they will hold an FCIP designation and have in-depth knowledge in all lines of business, specifically auto and property.  In addition to an impressive professional career, this new leader will possess post-secondary education paired with advanced knowledge of complex claims handling concepts, practices, and techniques, as well as experience in the adjudication of complex property and casualty claims.
